What exactly is a PHEV, and how does it differ from other hybrids?

What are the honest weaknesses of the MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV?

If you drive under 60 km per day and can charge at home or at work, the Tomahawk PHEV's economics make sense over a 4-5 year ownership period, assuming petrol prices stay at current levels. You will run almost entirely on electricity for daily use, with the petrol engine reserved for highway runs.

If you drive 60-150 km per day in mixed urban-highway conditions and cannot reliably charge, a strong hybrid like the Maruti Grand Vitara or Toyota Hyryder is the more rational choice. Their 27.97 km/l ARAI claim translates into real fuel savings in city driving, with no charging dependency. The Grand Vitara's strong hybrid system is Toyota-derived and has a proven reliability record, a meaningful consideration for a technology that will be in your garage for a decade.

If your budget is under ₹15 lakh and you want some efficiency benefit, a mild hybrid like the Maruti XL6 Smart Hybrid or the Fronx 1.0 turbo Smart Hybrid delivers modest fuel savings through engine assistance and regenerative braking. These are not hybrids in any meaningful electric-driving sense. The Smart Hybrid label describes a fuel-saving assist system, not a vehicle that can run on electricity. But they are simpler, cheaper, and widely serviced across Maruti's network.

The Honda City e:HEV is the only strong-hybrid sedan here, with a two-motor system that runs on electric power alone in slow city traffic, and it claims 27.26 km/l. Its weakness is that it is a sedan in a market that has decisively moved toward SUVs, and it offers no plug-in option.

The Tomahawk PHEV is a genuinely new category in India's mainstream market. It is not perfect: the price is high, the charging dependency is real, and the efficiency claims are unverified in independent real-world tests. But it addresses the two biggest objections to pure EVs (range anxiety and charging infrastructure) while offering daily electric commuting for buyers who can charge at home. That is a meaningful proposition, and one that the strong hybrid segment cannot match on electric range alone.
