Hybrid position
Honda is a strong-hybrid specialist in India, offering its proprietary e:HEV twin-motor system exclusively — with no mild-hybrid or plug-in hybrid variants currently in the lineup.
Hybrid strategy
Honda's hybrid strategy in India is anchored by its proprietary e:HEV (electric hybrid vehicle) strong-hybrid system, which uses a twin-motor setup where the petrol engine primarily acts as a generator and the electric motor drives the wheels in most conditions. The City e:HEV is the brand's flagship hybrid offering in India — and the only strong-hybrid sedan in the sub-₹30 lakh segment — featuring automatic switching between full-EV, hybrid and engine modes without driver intervention. Honda does not currently offer mild-hybrid or plug-in hybrid variants in the Indian market.
The e:HEV technology is developed entirely in-house by Honda Motor Co., and the City e:HEV is assembled locally at Honda Cars India's Tapukara plant in Rajasthan. The system claims a fuel efficiency of 27.26 kpl (ARAI-certified), though real-world figures are typically lower. Honda has also introduced the ZR-V SUV in India (launched May 2026), which is expected to carry hybrid powertrain options, broadening the brand's hybrid SUV footprint.
Globally, Honda announced at its 2026 press conference that it will reallocate significant development and production resources toward hybrid models, accelerating launches ahead of original schedules. A next-generation twin-motor hybrid system — claimed to improve fuel economy by more than 10 percent and reduce system costs by 30 percent — is slated to underpin new models from 2027 onwards. Honda India plans to launch 10 new models by 2030, of which seven will be SUVs, with a new compact SUV expected around 2028 that could carry the updated hybrid architecture.
In the near term, Honda India's hybrid roadmap remains focused on the strong-hybrid segment, positioning the City e:HEV as a premium, efficiency-first alternative to SUV-based hybrids from Maruti Suzuki and Toyota. The brand's in-house hybrid technology and established service network give it a credibility advantage, though its hybrid model count remains limited compared to rivals.
