Hybrid position
MG Motor is India's first mass-market PHEV entrant, leveraging SAIC-derived technology through its ADAPT platform to offer plug-in hybrid and strong-hybrid SUVs alongside its established EV lineup.
Hybrid strategy
JSW MG Motor India has positioned itself as a pioneer in mass-market plug-in hybrid vehicles, a segment it is entering ahead of any other volume carmaker in India. The brand confirmed in early 2026 that a PHEV SUV — codenamed 520 and based on the Wuling Starlight 560/Eksion platform — would go on sale alongside an EV variant, with a target launch window of mid-to-late 2026. The PHEV powertrain (claimed) pairs a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a 20.5 kWh battery for a claimed electric-only range of around 100 km, targeting buyers who want electrified efficiency without range anxiety.
Underpinning MG's hybrid ambitions is the proprietary ADAPT (Advanced Drive Architecture Platform Technology) platform, unveiled in July 2026. ADAPT is designed to support pure EVs, PHEVs, strong hybrids and range-extender hybrids from a single architecture, with no pure-ICE derivatives planned. Key hardware includes a naturally aspirated petrol engine with a claimed thermal efficiency of up to 43 percent, a Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT) featuring a world-first electromagnetic e-clutch, and a 10-in-1 drive unit integrating a permanent magnet synchronous motor with a 2-stage reduction gearbox.
The hybrid technology is sourced from MG's parent, SAIC Motor, and its sister brand Wuling — both part of the broader SAIC group — giving JSW MG access to a deep bench of NEV architectures developed for the Chinese market and adapted for India. The Hector Tomahawk PHEV, priced from ₹25.70 lakh (ex-showroom), is MG's first PHEV product in India, while strong-hybrid variants are also on the ADAPT roadmap for future models.
MG's stated goal is for 75 percent of its total India sales to come from new energy vehicles (NEVs), encompassing EVs, PHEVs and strong hybrids. The brand has explicitly said it does not intend to enter segments merely to participate — it aims to lead. With aggressive pricing strategy (undercutting rivals has been a consistent pattern), a growing premium 'MG Select' retail channel, and a pipeline of six-plus electrified models planned across 2026–27, MG is staking out a distinctive position as India's first mass-market PHEV player.
