Renault is a strong-hybrid entrant in India, competing directly with Toyota and Maruti Suzuki's full-hybrid SUVs using its proprietary E-Tech system exclusively on the Duster.
Hybrid strategy
Renault's hybrid strategy in India is anchored by its proprietary E-Tech strong-hybrid system, developed in-house and drawing on the brand's Formula 1 expertise. The system pairs a naturally aspirated 1,789cc four-cylinder petrol engine with two electric motors — a 20hp generator and a 49hp traction motor — supported by a 1.4kWh battery pack, producing a combined output of 160hp and 172Nm. Unlike the e-CVT-based Toyota hybrid architecture used by rivals such as the Hyryder and Grand Vitara, Renault's E-Tech uses a multi-mode automatic gearbox with fixed gear ratios, offering a distinct driving character. Renault claims (unverified) that the system enables 80 percent of city driving to be completed in EV mode.
The 2026 Renault Duster is the flagship vehicle for this hybrid push in India, with strong-hybrid deliveries confirmed for before Diwali 2026. The Duster hybrid has already sold out its entire 2026 production allocation even before pricing was announced, signalling exceptionally strong consumer demand. Renault has stated it is actively working to increase capacity at its Chennai manufacturing plant to meet orders. Nearly 40 percent of urban demand for the Duster is reported to be for the hybrid variant, underscoring the powertrain's appeal in India's fuel-efficiency-conscious market.
Renault does not currently offer mild-hybrid or plug-in hybrid variants in India; its hybrid presence is exclusively through the full (strong) hybrid E-Tech system on the Duster. The brand positions the strong hybrid as a direct answer to the absence of a diesel option on the new-generation Duster, targeting buyers who prioritise running costs and city efficiency. Turbo-petrol variants (1.0-litre and 1.3-litre) are also offered alongside the hybrid, broadening the Duster's appeal across price points.
Looking ahead, Renault's sister brand Nissan is expected to launch the Tekton SUV sharing the same E-Tech hybrid platform, suggesting the technology will underpin multiple products in the Renault-Nissan Alliance's India lineup. CNG is not ruled out as a future option if customer demand warrants it, but no plug-in hybrid has been announced for India in the near term.
