Toyota is the pioneer and dominant force in hybrid technology in India, having introduced its self-developed Toyota Hybrid System (THS) — a full strong-hybrid architecture — to the market well before most rivals. The brand's India hybrid lineup spans multiple segments: the Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Innova HyCross carry strong-hybrid powertrains developed entirely in-house, while the Camry Hybrid and Vellfire bring Toyota's globally proven full-hybrid technology to the premium and luxury segments. The Fortuner also offers a mild-hybrid variant, broadening the brand's reach into the body-on-frame SUV space.

Toyota's strong-hybrid models use a parallel-series architecture that allows the vehicle to run in pure EV mode at low speeds, blending petrol and electric power seamlessly without requiring external charging. This self-charging approach has resonated strongly with Indian buyers wary of charging infrastructure gaps. The Urban Cruiser Hyryder strong hybrid, co-developed with Suzuki under the Toyota–Suzuki global alliance, uses Toyota's 1.5-litre Atkinson-cycle engine paired with an integrated electric motor, and is also sold as the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara strong hybrid.

Looking ahead, Toyota has demonstrated a flex-fuel hybrid prototype based on the Innova HyCross, capable of running on higher ethanol blends (claimed to be the world's first BS6 Stage II-compliant flex-fuel vehicle), signalling alignment with India's ethanol-blending policy goals. While Toyota has not announced a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model for India as of mid-2026, the brand continues to expand its strong-hybrid portfolio and has indicated openness to PHEVs and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles as part of its multi-pathway strategy globally.

Toyota's hybrid positioning in India is reinforced by its manufacturing presence at its Bidadi plant in Karnataka, where the Innova HyCross and Urban Cruiser Hyryder are assembled. The brand consistently emphasises total cost of ownership, fuel savings, and low tailpipe emissions as its core hybrid value proposition for Indian consumers.
