Best Hybrid SUV for Highway Road Trips in India (2026)

Best Hybrid SUV for Highway Road Trips in India (2026)

Judge a highway SUV on three things: distance between stops, overtaking torque and how tired you are after four hours. The Victoris is the only mainstream car that answers all three, but not in one variant: the strong hybrid has the range and no ADAS, while the ADAS variants are smart hybrids giving up about 7 km/l. All-wheel drive forces the same compromise, since ALLGRIP comes only with the smart hybrid on both the Victoris and Grand Vitara. Plan fuel stops at about 70 percent of any theoretical range figure.

For highway road trips, the Maruti Suzuki Victoris is the most complete hybrid SUV sold in India. Its strong hybrid claims 28.65 km/l, which on a 45-litre tank works out to roughly 1,289 km between fill-ups, and its ZXI+ AT variants at Rs 17,33,900 add Level 2 ADAS with adaptive cruise control that follows traffic down to a standstill. It is also the only SUV here with a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating, at 31.66 of 32.

A highway car is judged differently from a city car. Three things matter: how far it goes between stops, how easily it overtakes a loaded truck, and how tired you are after four hours. Fuel economy answers the first, torque the second, and driver assistance the third. Few of these SUVs do all three well.

Key takeaways

  • Victoris strong hybrid: about 1,289 km of theoretical range on a 45-litre tank, the longest of the mainstream hybrids.
  • Victoris ZXI+ AT, Rs 17,33,900: the only SUV under Rs 20 lakh here with adaptive cruise control that follows to a stop.
  • Honda ZR-V e:HEV: roughly 1,300 km of theoretical range and 315 Nm from its motor, the strongest overtaking punch below the Lexus range.
  • Brezza turbo: 170 Nm from 2,000 rpm plus blind spot warning and rear cross traffic alert, which is unusual kit for a compact SUV.
  • All-wheel drive for hill roads means stepping down to the smart hybrid on both the Grand Vitara and the Victoris, costing about 9 km/l.

Theoretical range is the certified mileage multiplied by the usable tank, which no one achieves in practice. It is a comparison tool, not a plan. Prices are ex-showroom Delhi from each manufacturer's own price list, and mileage, tank and equipment figures from each model's official brochure, in October 2026. Toyota publishes no ex-showroom prices on its Indian website, Honda quotes by city, and NEXA publishes a range rather than variant prices for the Grand Vitara and Fronx. The Kia Sorento Hybrid is also sold here as a three-row option, but Kia does not publish an accessible specification sheet for it, so it is not ranked above.

1. Maruti Suzuki Victoris

The most complete highway package under Rs 20 lakh, and the only one that gives you a choice between maximum range and maximum driver assistance.

Strong hybrid, for range: 1,490 cc engine at 68 kW, or 92.45 PS, and 122 Nm with a 59 kW, 141 Nm motor through an e-CVT, claiming 28.65 km/l. On the 45-litre tank that is about 1,289 km. Variants run from the VXI THS at Rs 16,42,900 to the ZXI+ (O) Strong Hybrid at Rs 19,98,900.

Smart hybrid automatic, for assistance: the ZXI+ AT at Rs 17,33,900 and ZXI+ (O) AT at Rs 17,43,000 carry Level 2 ADAS with adaptive cruise control including all-speed following and stop keeping, lane keep assist and a blind spot monitor. Claimed mileage drops to 21.06 km/l.

For hill roads: the ALLGRIP variants add Select all-wheel drive with Snow, Sport, Lock and Auto modes, at 19.07 km/l.

Comfort: ventilated front seats, 8-way powered driver seat, head-up display and a 360-degree HD camera on ZXi+ trims, with paddle shifters and brake hold on the automatics.

Safety: six airbags, 5 stars at Bharat NCAP with 31.66 of 32 and 43.00 of 49, and 5 stars at Global NCAP with 33.72 of 34 and 41.00 of 49.

The honest trade-off: you cannot have the longest range and the adaptive cruise control in the same car. The strong hybrid does not offer ADAS and the ADAS variants are smart hybrids. Decide which of the two actually makes your trips better.

2. Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara

The same powertrain as the Victoris with one addition that matters on a long drive: a driver-selectable EV mode.

Strong hybrid: 85 kW, or 115.56 PS, of total system output through an e-CVT, claiming 27.97 km/l, giving about 1,259 km on its 45-litre tank. Variants are Delta+, Zeta+, Zeta+(O), Alpha+ and Alpha+(O).

For hill roads: ALLGRIP Select all-wheel drive with hill descent control, on the smart hybrid Alpha automatics at 19.20 km/l.

Comfort: cruise control on every variant, ventilated front seats from Zeta, head-up display and 360 View Camera on Alpha trims, paddle shifters and brake hold on the 6AT.

Price: NEXA publishes a range of Rs 10.77 lakh to Rs 19.77 lakh.

The catch: no Bharat NCAP result, and no ADAS on any variant.

3. Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder

The same strong hybrid again, with the simplest lineup and cruise control on every grade.

Powertrain: 85 kW, or 115.56 PS, through e-Drive, claiming 27.97 km/l for about 1,259 km on 45 litres.

Grades: Hybrid S, G(O) and V. Ventilated front seats on G(O) and V, 360-degree camera and head-up display on the V.

Price: Toyota publishes none.

4. Honda ZR-V e:HEV

The longest theoretical range here and the strongest overtaking punch below Lexus money.

Powertrain: A 2.0-litre e:HEV with a 105 kW, or 143 PS, engine making 189 Nm and a traction motor making 135 kW, or 184 PS, and 315 Nm from zero to 2,000 rpm. System output is 135 kW.

Range: 22.80 km/l on a 57-litre tank, about 1,300 km.

Why it suits highways: 315 Nm available from zero rpm is what an overtake actually needs, and Honda quotes 0 to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds. Honda SENSING brings adaptive cruise control with low speed follow, lane keeping assist and road departure mitigation.

Price: Honda quotes through a city-specific checker rather than publishing a list.

5. Lexus NX 350h and RX

The premium end, where full-speed adaptive cruise control and all-wheel drive are standard rather than optional.

NX 350h: 176 kW of total system output with E-Four all-wheel drive, claiming 20.26 km/l on a 55-litre tank for about 1,114 km. From Rs 67.93 lakh.

RX 350h: 181 kW with E-Four. From Rs 90.44 lakh.

RX 500h: a 2,393 cc turbo making 200 kW and 460 Nm, with motors front and rear for 273 kW through DIRECT4 all-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic. Lexus claims 6.2 seconds to 100 km/h. From Rs 1.11 crore.

Common to all: Lexus Safety System+ 3 with full-speed-range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, and ventilated front seats, with the RX adding ventilated outer rear seats.

6. Maruti Suzuki Brezza

Punches above its class on highway kit, and the cheapest car here with blind spot warning.

Powertrains: the 998 cc K10C turbo at 81 kW, or 110.12 PS, and 170 Nm from 2,000 rpm with a six-speed manual, claiming 19.96 km/l; or the 1,462 cc K15C at 103.05 PS and 139 Nm with a six-speed automatic, claiming 20.17 km/l.

Range: about 958 to 968 km on the 48-litre tank, the largest tank of the Maruti cars here.

Highway kit: cruise control and tyre pressure monitoring from ZXi, with blind spot warning, rear cross traffic alert and safe exit warning, plus the head-up display, 360 View Camera and ventilated seats on ZXi+.

Automatic prices: VXi AT Rs 10,60,900, ZXi AT Rs 12,00,500, ZXi+ AT Rs 13,70,500.

Safety: six airbags standard and a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating at 30.41 of 32 and 43.00 of 49.

7. Maruti Suzuki Fronx 1.0 turbo

The weekend option rather than the long-haul one, and the limiting factor is the tank.

Powertrain: 998 cc turbo with smart hybrid assistance, 73.6 kW or 100.06 PS and 147.6 Nm from 2,000 rpm, manual or six-speed automatic with paddle shifters.

Range: 21.5 km/l on the manual is the best smart hybrid figure here, but the 37-litre tank limits it to roughly 796 km. That is 500 km less than the Victoris strong hybrid, which is one extra fuel stop on a long run.

Highway kit: cruise control, head-up display and 360 View Camera on the Alpha. Boot space is 308 litres.

How to pick for your kind of trip

Long solo or two-up runs on good roads: the Victoris strong hybrid. The range advantage is real and the e-CVT is relaxed at a cruise.

Heavy highway traffic, long hours: the Victoris ZXI+ AT. Adaptive cruise control with stop keeping does more for fatigue over four hours than 7 km/l does for your wallet.

Frequent overtaking on two-lane highways: the Honda ZR-V, for 315 Nm from zero rpm, or the Brezza turbo if the budget is a tenth of that.

Hill roads or monsoon touring: the Grand Vitara or Victoris ALLGRIP, accepting about 9 km/l less than the strong hybrid.

One practical note: plan fuel stops on roughly 70 percent of the theoretical range. Certified figures come from a test cycle, and a loaded SUV at 100 km/h with the air conditioning running will not match them.

The Victoris strong hybrid at a claimed 28.65 km/l, then the Grand Vitara and Hyryder strong hybrids at 27.97 km/l. See the most fuel-efficient hybrid SUVs for the full ranking.

How accurate are the range figures?

Treat them as a comparison between cars, not a plan for your trip. They multiply the certified test-cycle mileage by the full tank, and a loaded SUV cruising at highway speed with the air conditioning on will fall well short. Budget for about 70 percent.

Mileage, tank capacities, powertrain details and equipment were taken from each model's official manufacturer brochure or manufacturer website, prices from each manufacturer's own price list, and crash scores from Bharat NCAP and Global NCAP, in October 2026. Range figures are calculated from certified mileage and tank capacity and are theoretical. Toyota does not publish ex-showroom prices on its Indian website, Honda quotes through a city-specific checker, and NEXA publishes a range rather than a variant list for the Grand Vitara and Fronx. Prices are ex-showroom Delhi and vary by city, variant and date.
