Kia entered India's hybrid segment in 2026 with the Sorento strong hybrid — its first self-charging hybrid for the Indian market — powered by a claimed 1.6-litre turbo-petrol hybrid system producing a combined 238 hp and 380 Nm (international spec). The Sorento is locally assembled at Kia's Penukonda plant in Andhra Pradesh and is positioned as the brand's flagship ICE/hybrid SUV, competing in the premium three-row segment. A Carnival strong hybrid is also confirmed for launch in 2026, using a similar 1.6-litre turbo-petrol hybrid architecture with a claimed combined output of 242 hp and 367 Nm.

Looking ahead, Kia's CEO Ho Sung Song confirmed at the 2026 CEO Investor Day that hybrid powertrains will be extended to key volume models from 2027 onwards. The Seltos hybrid is expected by 2027, likely based on the existing 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with a strong-hybrid system. The next-generation Sonet (due 2027, moving to the K1 platform) and the Carens Clavis are both slated to receive hybrid powertrains by 2028–2029, with the Carens Clavis expected to share the Seltos hybrid setup.

All of Kia's hybrid technology in India is sourced from the Hyundai Motor Group's in-house hybrid systems, leveraging shared platforms and powertrains across the group. Kia does not currently offer mild-hybrid or plug-in hybrid variants in India, though a plug-in hybrid powertrain joining the lineup in 2026 has been referenced in market commentary. The brand's hybrid strategy is firmly centred on strong (self-charging) hybrids for the Indian market, targeting fuel efficiency and lower running costs without requiring charging infrastructure.

Kia's broader India roadmap also includes a locally developed and manufactured B-segment electric SUV, expected to slot between the Syros and Seltos in size. This dual-track approach — strong hybrids for volume segments and EVs for urban buyers — positions Kia as one of the more aggressive hybrid entrants among Korean brands in India.
